Compiling kernel for suspend2 June 1, 2007

I’m currently compuling kernel for my ubuntu feisty. Because I have no clue how to patch the generic kernel on feisty. It always says, “patch to file:” which is confusing. Finally I decided to compile the vanilla kernel 2.6.20.11, because there’s a patch for it at suspend2.net. Well, I guess, we’ll see the result.

Before this, I just compiled the kernel 2.6.21.3. Apparently, the ndiswrapper ver 1.38 couldn’t work. Btw, Does anyone know how to wake up from suspend on feisty?

-Linux has taken over my time since I knew it, I’m totally addicted-

My Feisty Fawn upgraded to Ubuntu Studio May 25, 2007

Ubuntu is still Ubuntu whatever change that we make on it. That’s what I like from Ubuntu, it’s so flexible, although sometimes I get some problem that normally happens. After downloading, I’ve reinstalled my laptop for seven times, that’s considered a lot for only in a month.

Feisty Fawn with beryl 0.2.0

At this time, I used the different way to set up my partition. I reformatted my hard drive, and I make the partitions like this:

1. /boot, primary partition, ext3, 100 MB.
2. swap, primary partition, linux-swap, 1500 MB.
3. extended partition:
# /root, logical partition, XFS, 6000 MB
# /usr, logical partition, XFS, 8000 MB
# /var, logical partition, XFS, 5000 MB
# /home, logical partition, ext3, 25000 MB
The setting is vary depending on your harddisk capacity.

The partition setting is kind of different than what I used to do, because I read on some websites that separate /home partition is safer, just in case the system failed, we still could reinstall the system without worrying data lost. Although the ext3 is pretty good most of the time.XFS is said to be faster than ext3, yet it’s true, but not always. XFS is faster in handling the big files but ext3 is good in handling big roots. And so far, I’m happy with my Ubuntu+XFS and have no problem with it.

I also upgraded my Ubuntu to Ubuntu Studio using Ubuntu studio repository. Here is the way:
1. Add the deb http://archive.ubuntustudio.org/ubuntustudio feisty main to the sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
2. Type wget -q http://archive.ubuntustudio.org/ubuntustudio.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add - on the terminal.
3. Type sudo apt-get update
4. And you can pick anything you want to install from Synaptic Package Manager, System> Administration> Synaptic Package Manager. Type ubuntustudio on the package list and checklist any ubuntustudio package that you’d like.
5. Click apply and after the installation is done, restart your computer.

NB: If you have compiled the ATI or Nvidia graphic driver before installing Ubuntu Studio, and you want to use the low latency kernel. You have to recompile it again in order to get it work.

This was just happening at 6:30 p.m. When I was browsing on internet after came home from track practice, guess what? The electricity went off for 2,5 hours in Raymond, Minnesota, the place that I have been staying for seven months for this Exchange Students program. I would not be that surprised if that happened in Indonesia, which feels normal..ehm..

I thought, that problem could only happen in developing or poor country, but finally my verdict was wrong. Like what Metallica band say “Nothing else matters..” What the heck??…:-p

Ogg Vorbis April 14, 2007

A nice thing would be even nicer if it’s free, like open source program. Nowadays, Mp3 is the most popular format in the world, because it’s widely supported by most player. The bad part, it’s not free if we were artists and decided to sell any of our musics.

About 2 years ago, I used to use Mp3 for my musics’ library before I found this format. I changed to Ogg Vorbis because I got some at hard drive, my desktop PC only had 36 Gbyte for sure. And that computer was used for any activities related to the multimedia, like storing digital picture, playing games, and even for working since my mom was a writer. I browsed through google and I found the weird format called OGG. Honestly it was not under purpose I used Ogg. But I did not have any choices besides converting 8 Giga byte music on that hard drive.

Here is the OGG Vorbis, the new lossy format which takes less space than MP3 with the same quality, in other words, it gives more quality at a same bit rate. Currently, I totally can’t explain why Ogg is better than Mp3 in the technical description, but for the example of the Ogg, Mp3, and WMA comparison at 64 kbps bit rate can be downloaded for free(Thanks xiph.org !

Don’t expect your computer can play that format. First of all, you need the directshow filter codec for windows, and then you can use almost music player like Winamp, or Windows Media Player that already installed in every windows version. There are some more that I haven’t tried yet. I don’t know if it’s good or not, here are The core media player, Zoom Player, Rad Light, and Zinf, they are all free. For Macintosh user, this is the complete info about ogg in Mac.

To convert a song from Mp3 to Ogg, you will need a software to do that. Since there are so many softwares, so I’ll just write what I use, They are SUPER, dbpoweramp and the codec for dbpoweramp. Super is totally free and also can be used to convert many popular video format, which is nice, then you can convert your favourite video into avi, mpeg, etc. dbpoweramp is the trial software, but you can still use that software after 30-day-trial except for the feature for converting into any Mp3 format will be disabled. OggDropXpd could also be used for alternative, but I haven’t tried it. And also BeSweet, the multi format converter. For those of you who like the command line converter, you can try OggEnc, I really don’t like command line, It’s boring, but addicting. ;p.

Well, I suppose, that’s all that I can give to you guys. I hope it such an useful information. See ya, thanks for reading, Enjoy.

My Laptop April 11, 2007

Assalammualaikum..

I just got this laptop about 7 months ago, either September/October 2006. It is Compaq v5000z series, powered by AMD. I don’t really care whether any computer has AMD or Intel or whatever, because they are same if we just use it for typing, browsing, and listening to the song, every machine can do, even thuogh I’m kind of a little IT guy, :-). The reason I did buy this laptop was, I need a computer to do all of my assignments from my teachers which has really helped me a lot.

Compaq v5000z

It was bought at Officemax and has got AMD Sempron 3300+ @2.0 Ghz, Fujitsu 60 Giga Byte 4200 RPM harddrive, 15,4 inch widescreen, Dual Layer DVD/CD burner with Light Scribe which I don’t really use, 2×256 MB DDR PC2700, Win XP home and some other junk softwares. My first opinion and feeling after I got this laptop was so happy, since it was my first laptop. Anyway, I was looking for laptop that had got a DVD burner, and 512 MB RAM to , that’s it. And then, I was browsing some sites and I found this laptop for 599 bucks! I went to the OfficeMax and boom!! Laptop came to my hand.

I did not really understand about computer at that time, because I had been busy doing some hiking and VISA thingy thing for exchange student’s program. After several months, I found that my laptop was a little heavy, 6.2 lbs was not really light to me, and the perfomance was not quite high compare to iMac core duo, :p. That made me thinking to change a laptop to IBM or Apple to get a light weight notebook and high performance one.

Apple Mac Book 13″ Core 2 duo

The problem that I found was on the Broadcom wireless 43xx. That thing worked very nice on Windows XP but could not be used under Ubuntu Linux due to the driver problem which was and would never be supported by the vendor. Although there was a driver called Ndiswrapper that was very common on linux to solve this problem, but I still don’t know the tiring command to do that till right now.

Go open source!! Let’s try not to use piracy software, there are lots of open source softwares that we can use to substitute those spendy softwares. To fulfill my curious feeling with the difference between commercial and open source softwares, I use:

-7zip for compressing RAR, ZIP, and etc.
-OpenOffice.org 2.1 for worksheet, word, and office applications.
-The GIMP 2.2.13
-Winamp 5
-Yahoo Messenger for chatting
-RKLauncher to make Macintosh toolbar
-CCleaner
-dBpoweramp to converto to OGG
-Inkscape for Image Editing
-Foxit reader to open .pdf format
-Super for converting video into different format
-Scribus for making publishing thing.
-Faststone image viewer
-AMD64 clock
-Right mark CPU utility
-XP Speed switcher
-windowfx for vista effect.
-Sonic CD/DVD burner.
-Opera Internet browser
-FreeRam Xp Pro

My advice to you guys is just don’t look for a pretty heavy laptop, because once you buy laptop, you are going to have something that portable and comfort. Don’t forget to check the battery, mine is about 3 hours with the lowest brightness, without using WiFi and use AMD64 Clock software, which helps to reduce CPU clock and voltage. Once again, I wanna get a second hand macbook or ibook or even IBM, I’m hoping in several months I could get that.

That’s all I think from me at this time, see ya. Assalammualaikum

Track and Field 2007 April 10, 2007

A:Eh, lo mau shopping ga weekend ini?

Salam

Piracy, piracy, and piracy. In Indonesia, Piracy becomes popular, especially for the songs, videos and softwares. This thing can’t be avoided and becomes a habit in our society. If you don’t know the place of Pirate’s software, There are so many places in Jakarta where we can find it, for example in mangga dua, Pondok Cina near the University of Indonesia and many places that I can not say in this blog, lol. We can not remove the piracy unless the law is strong enough and used. Or, if the demand of the software and the technology in our country is too high, but we still can not afford the money to buy those things(As we know, that our GDP’s is so low compare to our neighbor, Malaysia). We can try to develop Linux.
Ubuntu

For those of you who do not know what Linux is, I’ll tell you. Linux was made from Unix, the most stable Operating System that was invented in 1971 by K.Thompson and D.M.Richie and also used for the kernel of Macintosh that is being very popular now with the iPod. The UNIX is very popular, because of its stability and the source code is available to be modified.

Linux Torvalds was invented the Linux in late 1991’s, when he was in Helsinki University. The linux development was from Linus Torvals idea to make the Minix OS easier to use and had more features. Minix was the Operating System that Linus Used to use when he was in college. But his idea was prohibited by Prof. Andy Tanenbaum, and then he wrote his own OS kernel based on UNIX under General Public License or GPL.That does not mean Linus Torvalds use UNIX Source code, but he made the OS like UNIX.

That’s the short story how linux was made, even though I did not write it completely, due to my knowledge factor :-). Let’s go to our title’s topic, Linux Experience. Some distros that I have ever used are Knoppix Live DVD, Knoppix live CD, and Ubuntu 6.06. It was really fun at first because I met new experience using linux Live DVD which I downloaded for about 9 hours!! That Distro was not a really good stuff compare to Ubuntu except fot the ease of use. All I did was just inserting the DVD/CD and then wait till the linux start-up screen shows. I found many programs in that package that are readily use such as gimp, openoffice, phyton source code editor, and all that kind of stuff. My problem happened after a couple minutes I used that distro, I felt that Distro was really slow, and needed more memory to operate.

Back to Ubuntu, I definitely loved this Distro, you guys who are interested can download it at ubuntu.com. And I bet they have a newest version of Ubuntu.

The first step that i did was just making a new partition using gParted Live CD, an open source parttition maker. From 60 Gbyte harddisk in my laptop, I divided it into five partitions, the first one is for windows the second one was the for any multimedia files, the third one was already there from the manufacturer, and the last one was for linux which I made the extended partition first since i could not make partition more than four, so I decided to divide the extended with ext3 filetype into two parts. One for swap, and one for ubuntu. I would like to say to you guys use at least 5 GB for Ubuntu. And for the swap partition, set it to the half amount of your system memory.

After those steps, I installed it from the ubuntu desktop (that’s the easiest way to do). Just wait, and Ubuntu would be the part of your computer. I totally like Ubuntu interface, even though I have been using windows for ten years since windows 3.01. After having fun changing the desktop environment and learning how the interface works, I found a problem. My wireless was not working in Ubuntu, I could only play ogg song file types on it. And I still can’t solve that problem till now. However, Ubuntu Dapper Drake was released in June 2006, and always be released every six months. So, may be Ubuntu has already launched the newer and the better one, I guess.

And my verdict is, Ubuntu is free, although a little bit more complicated than windows, but it’s still worthwhile compare to Windows which we have to pay hundred dollars to use it. Anyway, Ubuntu still can be used for internet browsing, unless it’s a cable one, not a wireless. The solution for Ubuntu wireless is /ndiswrapper, but i don’t understand how to do it. Well, it’s time for us to make a Big Revolution against Piracy and Monopoly, Let’s develop something that being used by many people to be free, full of freedomness. Hope Indonesia can wake up from all of the problems and disaster. Amin
